Taken from Wikipedia:
Termites are a group of eusocial insects that, until recently, were classified at the taxonomic rank of order Isoptera (see taxonomy below), but are now accepted as the epifamily Termitoidae, of the cockroach order Blattodea. While termites are commonly known, especially in Australia, as “white ants“, they are only distantly related to the ants.
Like ants, and some bees and wasps—which are all placed in the separate order Hymenoptera—termites divide labor among castes, produce overlapping generations and take care of young collectively. Termites mostly feed on dead plant material, generally in the form of wood, leaf litter, soil, or animal dung, and about 10% of the estimated 4,000 species (about 2,600 taxonomically known) are economically significant as pests that can cause serious structural damage to buildings, crops or plantation forests. Termites are major detritivores, particularly in the subtropical and tropical regions, and their recycling of wood and other plant matter is of considerable ecological importance.
As eusocial insects, termites live in colonies that, at maturity, number from several hundred to several million individuals. Colonies use decentralised, self-organised systems of activity guided by swarm intelligence which exploit food sources and environments unavailable to any single insect acting alone. A typical colony contains nymphs (semimature young), workers, soldiers, and reproductive individuals of both sexes, sometimes containing several egg-laying queens.
About Termite Treatments Available:
Being that termites are social creatures and rely on each other to feed the colony Science has taken full advantage of this social behavior. Years ago the products available killed the termites on contact but this didn’t take care of the colony that was already infesting an area of the home. Since the products killed all termites that come in contact with it the termites didn’t make it back to the colony and many infestations remained infestations. Other products were simply termite repellants that made a barrier around the home locking in termites already present while keeping out termites that may be foraging in the dirt through the yard.
Current products work in a much more efficient manner. Termidor which is used by many pest control firms is one of the top rated products on the market. This product doesn’t kill termites immediately. If allows time for the worker termites to move to and from the colony infesting all the termites that they come in contact with. This is called a Transfer Effect and takes full advantage of the termites social behavior to deal with the infestation. Other products like this are available but tend to have a shorter life span. Termidor is the name trusted most when it comes to Termite Control.
Baits, In many circumstances a combination of a product such as Termidor and Advance Bait System. In some circumstances where the structure may have water around it or other issues that prevent a full Termidor Treatment then a bait system may be used. In some cases customers want the bait stations, system rather than a perimeter treatment. We won’t go into all the reasons why but just know it’s a choice and one available. They work but sometimes do require more time than a traditional termite treatment with a product such as Termidor. Since the stations are located in the yard, around the structure the termites must first forage to find the stations before the product can start to work on an infestation. Once found they do work on a transfer effect much like the other products out today.
