Termite Overview
Subterranean Termites are a major concern for anyone who owns property containing any amount of wood or cellulose material. This is virtually all property. In Oklahoma each acre of land averages approximately 18-21 colonies of termites. Considering each colony could potentially have 350,000 or more termites, that’s a whole lot of wood destroying power.
Termites harbor one-celled organisms in their digestive tracts which convert cellulose material into a substances termites can digest. Termites serve a major role in nature by converting dead wood and other organic materials containing cellulose into humus. Termites play a vital role in the decomposition of organic material. It’s only when termites begin feeding on our homes and buildings that they become a major concern. Termites destroy the structural integrity by feeding on the very part of the structure which gives it strength, the wood materials. They are also able to eat paper from sheetrock and other paper materials that may be present.
Termites are social insects. This means there is a division of labor among different types of individuals, called castes. Termites have a reproductive and a soldier caste, however, most of the work (nest building, food gathering, and feeding of the reproductives and soldiers) are handled entirely by the nymphs which are simply an immature stage of the termite colony. The nymphs are the termites that damage structures.
The soldiers only duty is to defend the colony against enemies. Soldiers together with the reproductive termites are fed entirely by the worker termites.
Ants or Termites?
The winged adult termites “Alates” are known as the primary reproductives. These are most often referred to as termite swarmers. They emerge from the colonies on colonizing flights during certain seasons of the year. This is when a male (king) and female (queen) will mate and begin to form a new colony.
Many times these swarmer termites are confused with flying ants. There are three ways to distinguish termites from ants. First, ants have a very thin waste between the thorax and the abdomen, while termites are broad waisted. Second, termite wings are all the same size and shape, whereas the forewings of the ant are larger, longer, and of a different shape than the hind wings. And third, termite antennae are straight, while the ants’ antennae are elbowed.
Termite Treatment
Termite treatments can be done in a variety of methods. These services can be in the form of a spot treatment, a full liquid treatment and or a baiting system. EnviroTech has the tools, skills and knowledge necessary to treat any type of structure. Commercial and residential structures are all prone to termite activity regardless if the building has a brick or rock exterior. Almost all buildings have wood as part of the structure. Termites can even eat on the paper portion of sheet rock. The only buildings not subject to termite damage are buildings made of steel, metal, concrete or other non wood products.
Important: Not every structure can be treated by a liquid termite treatment. Structures built on properties with underground springs, well water or a high water table may need a termite baiting system. Homes with excessive foundation movement, cracking or shifting may need a combination of a termite treatment with liquid and perhaps bait system. If the dwelling cannot be properly serviced via liquid treatment, it may be necessary to use a baiting system. Termite baiting systems have advanced considerably over the last few years. At EnviroTech we listen to our customers concerns and needs, examine the structure and ask questions to determine which type of treatment is best suited for you. Regardless of which treatment you chose, EnviroTech will provide the service with professionalism and care.

Termite Control Liquid Treatment
The most common approach to termite control is to apply a chemical barrier sometimes called Liquid Barrier in which termites must pass through before they can gain access to a structure. In order to create a solid chemical barrier, termiticide insecticide must be applied to the perimeter of the structure(s) being treated. In addition, it is also necessary at times to treat any voids that may be present in the foundation walls. One of the best types of chemical formulation to use is known as a non-repellent (e.g. Termidor, Premise, Taurus, Fuse). This is the latest in chemical technology and is becoming more popular with each passing year. This type of chemical is undetectable by termites, therefore, they do not know it is present and will continue to travel through the treated area. By doing so the termites will transfer the chemical back to the colony and eventually eliminate the entire colony over a short period of time.
Spot Treatment
Sometimes if a full treatment is not desired or feasible a partial treatment or Spot Treatment can be done. This sort of treatment cannot be put under a service contract since the structure is only partially treated. Spot treatments have NO Warranty or Service Contract but can be converted into a Full Treatment at a later time. Spot treatments in most cases will not satisfy lender requirements for the sale or purchase of a property.
